eSwatini (formerly known as Swaziland) is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, the population of which is composed primarily of ethnic Swazis. The government of eSwatini is an absolute monarchy, the last of its kind in Africa, and has been ruled by King Mswati III since 1986. Elections are held every five years to determine the House of Assembly and the Senate majority. However, the eSwatini constitution effectively bans political parties; only individuals can stand for election.
According to third-party polling, nearly half of eSwatini’s population would prefer democracy as their form of governance, and 59 percent of Swazis want the ban on political parties to be lifted. Since pro-democracy demonstrations began in 2021, the government of eSwatini has intensified its clampdown on dissenting views by arresting government critics, interfering with peaceful assembly, and resisting calls for democratic reforms.
The People’s United Democratic Political Movement (PUDEMO) is a pro-democracy group in eSwatini. PUDEMO declines to participate in elections on an individual basis, citing political interference by the king. Other pro-democracy groups, such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), have declined to participate in elections for similar reasons.
